1. Slovanské gymnázium guides its students toward conscious civic and global citizenship

Fostering civic and global citizenship is also an integral part of teaching at 1. SG. Talks with prominent guests, who present their professional work in an engaging way, help develop students' democratic thinking and their own opinions and views on events at home and abroad.

1. SG recently welcomed the political commissar of the American Embassy in Prague, Lawrence Korb. Mr. Korb conducted the entire discussion in English, giving students a chance to put their real English skills to the test and practice reacting on the spot to a native speaker.

Another prominent guest who accepted an invitation from the leadership of 1. SG was one of the two highest-ranking Czechs in the European Parliament, MEP Pavel Svoboda. This allowed students to enrich their knowledge from the subjects Political Science, the Diplomacy and International Relations Seminar, Law, and Basics of Social Sciences. After an introductory presentation on the workings of the EU and the European Parliament, Mr. Svoboda let students ask questions about the EU's activities and remit. This led to a spontaneous, informal discussion in which students could try out their ability to hold a political debate.
