SlovGym at Pankrác

On 13 March 2024, a long-planned and eagerly awaited excursion took selected 3rd-year students to Pankrác Prison in Prague, where the students were able to learn about how the prison operates and be right there in the premises of the Pankrác remand prison. Only 19 students were permitted to take part in this exceptional event, as a supplement to their studies of the law course, which is taught precisely in the third years of our school. During the excursion itself, the students were accompanied by the head of the prison director's secretariat, who answered their many questions in a friendly and knowledgeable way, including the average length of detention in the remand prison, the reasons for custody, the number of men and women held there, and other interesting queries. As part of the tour, the students were also able to look directly into the remand prison's cells, where they could see the daily routine within a cell, including wake-up call, lights-out, meals and other activities of the detainees. The excursion itself lasted about 90 minutes and, according to the students, was very worthwhile and interesting for them. All the students, as well as others who could not join the first excursion, would welcome a further visit to the prison, specifically to its memorial section. The prison would likely be able to accommodate their request sometime in May–June 2024. This is a site where capital punishment was once carried out on convicts, both during the Second World War under the Nazis, and as part of political and ordinary judicial trials until 1989, when the last person to be executed in the Czech Republic was put to death. The death penalty was subsequently abolished and an exceptional sentence – life imprisonment – was newly established.
