The last week of June is traditionally marked by trips and exploring corners of our country. The first trip was a hike up Mount Říp. After successfully climbing up to the Rotunda of St. George, students continued to the nearby HistoryPark in Ledčice, where they could try things like archery or find out what it's like to be an archaeologist.
Selected students from the gymnázium visited the chemistry labs of our partner gymnázium in Slaný, which has long cooperated with Czech Television on filming episodes of the show Zázraky přírody (Miracles of Nature). During the demonstration, a modern interactive touchscreen board was used, which our students found very exciting. Last week, from Monday to Friday, oral maturita exams took place. Fourth-year students sat exams in Czech language, foreign languages, and a wide range of specialized subjects, which again included foreign languages as well as humanities and science subjects. Third-year student Adam Střihavka became a finalist in the national Economics Olympiad. Competing against 15,000 students, he made it into the top 50 finalists, and in the concurrently running Czech National Bank competition he even finished among the top four competitors. He received the olympiad finalist award at the ceremonial announcement of the competition's results at the Czech National Bank's headquarters. Congratulations!
On 6 March 2019, the second in-person round of the Russian language olympiad, announced by Saint Petersburg State University, took place in the building of the Russian Centre of Science and Culture. Seven students of our school advanced to this round. Two third-year students, Cvetana Dobreva and Alina Nazarenko, took 1st place and won a trip to Saint Petersburg paid for by the olympiad's organiser. Congratulations!
Even before the 4th-year grading period closed, its students once again took the traditional opportunity to try out the specialized part of their maturita (school-leaving) exam in front of a committee made up, for now, only of the school's own teachers. Once again, our gymnázium is traditionally celebrating Teachers' Day, which in the Czech Republic falls on 28 March. This year, though, we're celebrating it in a somewhat less traditional way. For several years now, on this day, students have swapped roles with the teachers and school leadership. The competition is intended for students studying Russian as a foreign language. Various countries take part. Applicants sign up individually for the first round and complete the tasks remotely. Their knowledge of the Russian language and Russian culture, as well as their creative abilities, are tested. It's a great achievement for 1. SG that a total of 8 students advanced to the second round of the olympiad.

Selected students of 1. SG took part, as a reward, in a professional seminar held at the Chamber of Deputies, under the auspices of Members of Parliament Monika Jarošová and Jiří Kobza. The seminar dealt with the issue of Czech anti-drug policy and the Czech drug scene. A whole range of cultural and social activities are an integral part of life at 1. SG, helping students develop good etiquette and social manners. Every year, at the start of the calendar year, a formal ball is held, dedicated mainly to fourth- and first-year students. As part of the ball, they take part in the formal ribbon and matriculation ceremony.
